Community Portraits
How well is your neighbourhood suited to your needs?
What is a community portrait?
The community portrait is a project we’ve been doing to help measure how suitable neighbourhoods in Sheffield are for the needs of older people.
We’ve done this by scoring the neighbourhood against nine different areas that are of concern for older people. These are
- Improving Health and Emotional Well-Being
- Improving Quality of Life
- Making a Positive Contribution
- Exercising Choice and Control
- Enjoying freedom from discrimination and harassment
- Economic Well-Being
- Personal Dignity and Respect
- Access to Services
- Demographic Need
These scores are worked out using information about the area and its residents.
The reason we’ve done this piece of work is to see where we can improve services and where things are working well.
Darnall
Darnall is the first neighbourhood we’ve described using the community portrait. A score has been worked out for each of the nine areas.
We’ve done a series of focus groups with the people of Darnall. These have given people the opportunity to say what the community portrait says about Darnall. People have considered what is important in the neighbourhood and what services they’d like to see developed.
We will then look at what changes are needed and start to plan how we will make these changes in the neighbourhood.
Using the Darnall community portrait
The community portrait is displayed as a graph with 9 axes, one for each topic. Darnall’s performance is shown as the light blue area, whilst the dark blue area shows the Sheffield average. Darnall has been given an overall score and a score for each topic; these are shown as a rank out of 10 and are written after the topic name on each axis.
