POPPS News
POPPs celebration event
You may or may not have heard, but we're having a POPPs celebration event on 1 October 2008 at the City Hall.
The event is taking place to celebrate Partnerships for Older People Projects (POPPs), and the contribution older people have made to developing our services.
There will be information stalls from 10am - 1pm showing the different POPPs projects, and how these have helped to shape existing services. A number of other organisations will also be providing information about services for older people in Sheffield, including:
- Department for Work and Pensions
- 50 plus
- Liberata - Housing and council tax benefit
- Affordable Warmth Team
- Extra care housing
- First point
- Care4you
- Physical Disability and Sensory Impairment (PDSI)
- Self directed support and direct payments
- Activity Sheffield
- Intermediate services
- Sheltered housing - Sheffield Homes.
There will be a chance to try out chair-robics, or a range of complimentary massages. Also look out for the POPPs celebration fairy cakes!
We're also using the day to thank our network of Expert Elders for their effort and dedication to POPPs. There will be a free lunch served to all our Expert Elders between noon and 1pm where they'll be entertained by African steel band, UK Mama.
Expert Elders will be presented with certificates and messages of thanks, plus an Expert Elders badge and a copy of our new POPPs DVD. This will be followed by a Tea Dance, with a live organist from 1.30 until 2.30pm.
Invites are being sent out to appropriate organisations and people, but feel free to drop by between 10am and 1pm. If you've any questions about the event please call Matthew Simmonite on 273 5925 or email nccinfo@sheffield.gov.uk.
Please note refreshments will be available on the day but will have to be purchased from the City Hall.

Community link workers - an inside view
Over the last eighteen months, Community Link Workers have helped over 4,000 older people access the services, resources and support they need to enable them to retain their independence, maintain or improve their health and wellbeing, and enrich their social lives.
Case study
I received a telephone call from a man concerned with his elderly brother’s health. He spoke about his brother not eating properly and was at risk of being readmitted to hospital.
His brother had spent time in hospital resulting from several falls, which appeared to be due to malnutrition and poor diet. I arranged to visit his brother to identify what support might be needed.
We talked about various issues, and he told me that he was not eating properly because he did not feel hungry and he did not feel like preparing a meal. I discussed the possibility of trying the hot meal delivery service – the gentleman agreed.
I visited the following weeks and was delighted to see he was enjoying his food and had put on weight.
For further information about Age Concern and the different services available telephone (0114) 250 2859.
Care Home Olympics
Care home residents and staff recently joined forces to participate in the first Sheffield Care Home Olympics held at Don Valley. Competitors were tested on their physical and mental agility.
A team called ‘Pexton Grange’ captured the top prize, with the team ‘Sheffcare three’ gaining silver and ‘Grange Crescent’ the bronze. A team from Sevenfields Resource Centre also won a flag design competition - which saw some colourful entries.
Catherine Lawrence, Head of Older People’s Services at the council, opened the speeches and said the event would encourage more activity in older people.
Sheffield boxing legend, Herol ‘Bomber’ Graham officially opened the event, and he encouraged and supported all the competitors!
Many thanks to the British Heart Foundation, Activity Sheffield, POPPs and the care home teams for all their support. Also a big thank you to all the competing teams – you were all winners on the day!
Pension service - home visits
The local pension service is a team dedicated to helping customers aged 60 plus to claim their full benefit entitlements. They visit customers in their homes and help them to complete the necessary paperwork. There’s no cost to the customer.
In 2006/07 the local pension service in Sheffield helped to claim £8.5 million in unclaimed entitlements for pensioners. This was made up mostly of Pension Credit, Attendance Allowance and Carers Premiums. They also refer you onto a range of complementary services that may be of help.
If you feel that you’d benefit from a home visit from the Sheffield Local Pension Service Visiting Team contact them on (0114) 203 3262.
