Children & Young People's Reviews

Independent Reviewing Officers

An Independent Reviewing Officer (IRO) arranges and chairs review meetings for all children and young people who are looked after.  These meetings are held wherever a child or young person is and whatever placement they are in.  These meetings check to see if the plans are working for the young person and any changes that are necessary are made.  Reviews are held regularly to make sure all looked after children are protected and their views are heard.

Children and young people are encouraged to be present and take part in their reviews.  The meeting will look at their care plans with others who can help put actions into place.  It is important for young people to think about who they would like with them at the review and what they would like to talk about.

Reviews should be held regularly to make sure care plans are working.

What happens at a review?

The review looks at a child or young persons educational, health and leisure requirements to see if all their needs are being met.  They also summarise what is trying to be achieved and check that each young person is happy with these aims.

A young persons family will also be involved in the review and a plan will be established about the amount of contact they may have with family members.

After each meeting the IRO produces a short report with a list of actions and who will take them.  This document describes what will be done and by whom before the next review meeting.

Pathway Plans

Any child or young person over the age of 16 will have a Pathway Plan.  These plans follow on from Care Plans which are for young children.  Pathway Plans focus on education, training and employment and are there to help young people become independent.  They can last until a young person is 21 or 24 if they are in higher education.

Understanding the Review

Someone the young person trusts should explain the report that the IRO produces after the review meeting to the young person.  Someone will be given the job of going through the proposed actions with the young person.  If after this there is anything they have any questions about they can contact their IRO for further information.
