Healthy City Team
What is a healthy city?
A healthy city is conscious of health and striving to improve it. The World Health Organisation (WHO) vision of a healthy city is:
- A clean, safe environment
- All people’s basic needs are met
- Strong, supportive community
- High degree of public participation in local and city government
- Access to wide range of cultural events and experiences
- Accessible health services
- Diverse and innovative economy
- A sustainable eco-system.
The WHO oversees a European Network of healthy cities. Sheffield is a member of this network and is accredited by the WHO as a healthy city. We report regularly to the WHO and participate in events and networks initiated by the Healthy City Movement. There are seven other healthy cities in Britain. These are:
- Belfast
- Camden
- Glasgow
- Liverpool
- Manchester
- Newcastle
- Stoke-on-Trent
What is the Sheffield Healthy City Team?
We're part of the Health Partnership Team, working to make Sheffield a healthier city and to reduce health inequalities. Our work is guided by the Health For All principles, which are:
- Right to health
- Equity
- Empowerment
- Participation
- Accountability
- Local co-operation and partnership
- National and international co-operation.
Our funding comes from a number of sources: the health sector, the Council, Sheffield Hallam University and contributions from the voluntary sector.
What do we aim to achieve?
- Recognition from the public, voluntary and private sectors, that health is a complex and crucial issue and that environmental, economic, social and other factors must be addressed for everyone’s health to improve.
- More effective partnership working in the city - to promote health and well being.
- Healthy public policy – government policies that support wellness of individuals and of society. These policies go beyond health care or even other public services.
- Community involvement, that is for the community to have a voice and for that voice to be heard.
How do we do this?
- We encourage people to challenge how things are done.
- Spread the idea of healthy cities and information about partnership and new ways of working – principally through the Sheffield First for Health newsletter.
- Supporting projects that aim to achieve health equality (for example, the Primary Care Advocacy Project, the Community Development and Health Programme).
- Work in partnership with other agencies. We work in Active Sheffield, the Transport and Health Group and Healthy Schools to develop healthy policy and maximise the health and well being of all communities.
- Developing and identifying good practice by engaging communities and hard-to-reach groups in health issues. The Community Development and Health Programme, for example, has an active network of community-based groups. It supports health agencies to implement Patient Public Involvement initiatives and to engage more effectively with their communities.
