Short Term Carers Dave and Betty

Dave and Betty
Dave and Betty tell us in their own words about their life as foster carers...

How long have you been foster carers and why did you go into fostering?

5 years.  We became friends with a couple who had been foster carers for some years who shared some of their experiences with us.  After 9 months of ‘mulling it over’ we felt our family was ready and willing to offer our home and family to other children.

What kind of fostering do you do and why?

Task centred.  We wanted our own children to feel safe in the knowledge that their position in the family is permanent but we wanted to share our family life with other children at a time when their own lives are disrupted and their future’s unclear.

How many children have you fostered?

10 – the shortest for 10 days the longest (to date) for 18 months.

Best memory of Fostering?

One little girl aged 2 ½, which we fostered for 14 months saw fireworks for the first time and shouted excitedly “Look at the banging lights”!  We don’t have fireworks now – just ‘banging lights’!

Do you have children of your own?  How do they feel about fostering?

Yes – a 9-year-old daughter and a 14-year-old son.  Most of the time they really enjoy having different children coming in and out of their lives.  We feel fostering has made them more caring and understanding but like most children they have their disagreements.

Why should someone go into fostering?

Because it’s, challenging, interesting, varied, time consuming, ‘never a dull moment’, hilarious, frustrating, tiring, but most of all extremely rewarding and enjoyable!
