Long Term Foster Carer Petrona
Petrona tells us in her own words about her life as a long term foster carer...
How long have you been a foster carer?
About 20 years, I only had one child then and wanted other children to play with my son.
What kind of fostering do you do and why?
Long term, because the kids become part of me and my family.
How many children have you fostered?
I had four for long term and 2 for short term, the longest one for 9 years. Four are still in contact!
Do you have children of your own?
Yes, 2 boys aged nearly 27 and 15. They love having foster children around especially the youngest who is very close to them – there’s no jealousy.
Why should someone go into fostering?
I can only go by my experience, I wasn’t brought up by my mum, I was brought up by my great-aunt who showed me lots of love and was the best mum in the world. I wanted to be able to give some love back.
If someone wants company for their own children or themselves and to give some love back – and get it back they should consider fostering.
