Foreword by Paul Massey, Service Manager Family Placement Services

"Dear Foster Carer

I am delighted to be asked to write this introduction to the new edition of the Foster Carers Handbook.  The Handbook is designed as a reference tool that you can easily access when there is information that you need to know. For that reason it is indexed A – Z with clear text.

As you will appreciate, legislation does change and this results in changing policies and procedures. This handbook takes account of the Adoption & Children Act 2002 and Children Act 2004 but where sections need to change as a result of future legislation these will be sent to you to insert into the handbook.

Our aim with this handbook is for it to assist you in your role as foster carers. We are indebted to you for carrying out that role and being such vital members of the social care workforce.  Any comments on the handbook would be gratefully received by Louise Gibson Family Placement Services Marketing Manager, your Supervising Social Worker or through the regular foster carer forum meetings.

Happy reading and thank you for all that you do and most of all for caring!"

Terminology

Through out the handbook the term child, children and young people is used interchangeably. The handbook also makes reference to he and she interchangeably.

Occasionally the handbook talks about your child, here unless specified we are talking about the foster child in your care.

A number of resources have been used to write this handbook where possible the reference for the source has been given. Nearly all of the books are available in the Family Placement Library.
