Can I Adopt?

Girl on slide
Yes, as long as you are over 21, have enough room to accomodate a child and have not commited a criminal offence against a child.

Quite simply, there is no such thing as the 'ideal' adoptive family.  So you don't have to conform to any particular stereotype.  As long as you're in general good health and have plenty of stamina.  It is what you can offer a child that's more important than anything else.

Things like having an open mind, being flexible and having realistic expectations about children.  A sense of humour and a patient, tolerant and accepting attitude are all essential.

There is no upper age limit on adults interested in adoption.  If you smoke you can still adopt, but it limits the age of the child you can adopt.  If you have been having treatement for infertility you will need to have stopped for at least 6 months prior to your application, in order to give you time to reflect and adjust to the idea of adoption.

Whether you are:

  • In a relationship, married or single
  • Have any children of your own or not
  • Gay, lesbian or straight
  • Have a disability
  • Living in your own house, rented or council accomodation
  • Employed or unemployed
  • From any religious or ethnic background

it doesn't matter!

You'll need a true understanding, interest and love of children and young people, the ability to listen, communicate and be open and honest.  Plus have the empathy to care for a child who may have experienced trauma of some kind in their early years.
