Cremation - Frequently Asked Questions
Here are some of the frequently asked questions regarding the cremation process.
- What percentage of people choose cremation?
Approximately 70% choose cremation in Great Britain. - Do any religions forbid cremation?
Yes, the Orthodox Jewish and Muslim religions do not approve of cremation. - Does it cost more to be cremated than buried?
Burial is more expensive than cremation, especially if a new grave has to be bought. - Can I have any type of service I wish at the crematorium?
Yes, you can have any type of service you wish or even none at all. Cremation services are held at the crematorium every 30 minutes and, if required, additional time can be arranged if a longer service time is required. The Funeral Director will make these arrangements. - What music can I have at the service?
An extensive range of recorded music is available at the crematorium to accompany services via the Wesley Music system. Please contact your funeral director or Bereavement Services for further advice. If required, a recording of the funeral service can be provided by prior arrangement with your funeral director, for an additional cost. The chapels contain either pipe or electronic organs if a more traditional type of funeral service is required. - What happens at the crematorium?
The cortege arrives at the crematorium and to coffin will be brought into the chapel followed by the mourners. The Bereavement Officer will be on hand to direct people to their seats and to ensure that the correct music is played on entry and exit (and sometimes during) the funeral service. - What happens at the end of the funeral service?
As the committal of the body takes place, curtains will be drawn around the coffin. The mourners will leave the chapel and are able to then express personal condolences and view floral tributes to the deceased. - How soon after the service does the actual cremation take place?
All cremations must, by law, be carried out on the same day as the cremation service. - Is the coffin cremated with the body?
Yes, the coffin is placed in the cremator just as it is received at the crematorium. All coffins, including fittings and furnishings must be made from combustible material. - Is more than one coffin cremated at the same time?
The Code of Cremation Practice and the size of the cremator allows for a single cremation only. - How do I know I will receive the correct cremated remains?
Each coffin must be identified by a name plate. An identity card follows the coffin and remains throughout the cremation process. - Can I inspect the Medical Certificates?
The Funeral Director will advise you further of this option at the time of arranging the cremation service.
