Taxi Rank Provision
New Taxi Facilities for Sheffield
Sheffield City Council has introduced a number of new and revised taxi ranks to the City Centre.
The additional rank facilities are a mix of existing ranks with extended times for use, and brand new sites. In full consultation and discussion with the City’s taxi representatives, Councillor Terry Fox and council officers have looked to introduce additional facilities to meet with demand.
Councillor Terry Fox, Cabinet Member for Transport at Sheffield City Council said: "The number of taxi’s serving the City has risen substantially over the years, as has the need for them; and in turn, the need for sufficient ranking space across the city centre. We have undertaken full discussion and consultation with the taxi driver representatives and will continue our meetings to identify further requirements outside of the city centre with a view to rolling them out in a continuous programme."
The changes in rank provision stem from last year’s Taxi Rank Review. The review looked at the locations of all black cab taxi ranks and their facilities taking into account new developments attracting large numbers of people - such as the New Retail Quarter, Heart of the City and so on, as well as city centre hotels and evening attractions.
The review looked at the location and accessibility of the ranks, signage, enforcing the ranks and what improved facilities could be provided. The taxi trade association, disabled taxi users and other parties were all consulted as part of the review.
Councillor Fox concluded: "Taxis are an invaluable means of transport for many people and so it’s right that we’ve taken the time to look at where we need to make improvements in the city centre. It’s part of our efforts to make transport to and from the city centre better."
