Public Requests for New Transport Projects

All requests for transport and road safety schemes, for example requests for pedestrian crossing facilities or measures to slow traffic, are assessed using our priority assessment system. This is to see how well they merit the use of Local Transport Plan (LTP) funding provided by the Government, and to see how they compare with the many other requests we receive.

As there is only limited funding available each year, this process helps us to prioritise the schemes on a fair and consistent basis.

How do I request a scheme?

If you have a request for a scheme then you can let us know in several ways.  The best way is to write in to us explaining the problem, the location (be as exact as possible), and what you think needs to be done.  Complete the request form below and either send a printed version to us by post, or email the completed form to transport@sheffield.gov.uk.

Alternatively you can give us a call.  If the scheme is primarily about improving road safety you can contact the Road Safety team on 0114 273 6166 or 273 6162.

For other schemes you can call the Transport Planning team on 0114 273 4479.

How do we assess requests?

When we receive a request, we will carry out a site visit to investigate the problem. If we decide that there is the potential for a scheme then we will enter it into the assessment process. Each scheme is assessed by a team of between three and six Transport Planning and Road Safety Officers, using a set of Council approved criteria, which are based on the LTP objectives.

Schemes are assessed regularly and the results are reported to Councillors every three months for approval. Generally, the schemes which score highest will be approved to be progressed to design stage.

What can you expect from us?

We will:
  • Investigate all the requests which we receive
  • Reply to you with confirmation of your request, usually within 10 days of receipt
  • Undertake the assessment generally within around 3-4 months, and let you know the outcome within a further month
