Experimental Traffic Changes in the Little London Road and Lakes Roads area.

Plan 4 Transport in Sheaf Valley is a partnership project between Sheffield City Council, South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive and local bus operators, with the aim of improving travel by public transport and reducing delays to buses in the Sheaf Valley.

Buses often experience delays at peak times of the day along parts of Abbeydale Road and Chesterfield Road.  One of the causes of this is the significant amount of traffic which uses Little London Road and the residential 'Lakes' Roads to cut through between Abbeydale Road and Chesterfield Road. When this traffic rejoins the main roads, delays result for buses, and other traffic. Proposals were therefore developed with the aim of reducing these delays. The scheme is designed to reduce the amount of through traffic using these roads, and improve the local environment for residents of the Lakes Roads.

Residents and businesses were informed of the proposals for an experimental traffic scheme last year and the comments received were reported to the City Centre, South and East Area Board in August 2005. After consideration, the Area Board approved the experimental scheme subject to agreeing the details of the scheme with the Fire Service who had concerns about emergency access to Little London road from Abbeydale Road via Langdale Road (as there are high risk properties on Little London Road).

The plans can be viewed at the bottom of this page and briefly include:
  • Making a section of Little London Road one-way between Chesterfield Road and Broadfield Way (away from Chesterfield Road)
  • The junction of Langdale Road and Rydal Road will be made one-way (towards Rydal Road)
  • A closure point on Rydal Road between the junctions with Langdale Road and Windermere Road.

Access between Abbeydale Road and Chesterfield Road is maintained via Broadfield Road, which also allows access to Little London Road via Broadfield Way. These are much more appropriate routes for through traffic to use than the narrow, residential ‘Lakes’ roads, and also allows better control of the traffic flow as the junctions with the main roads are signalised.

The measures are due to be implemented in March 2006 for an experimental period of 18 months maximum. This is so that we can closely monitor the effects before deciding whether to apply to make the scheme permanent.

The relevant Experimental Traffic Regulation Order, which is required for the scheme, will be advertised on-street and in the local press a few days before the scheme is implemented.  The legislation does not allow for objections to be made to the introduction of an Experimental Traffic Regulation Order but objections to the scheme being made permanent can be lodged within 6 months of the Order being made. Any objections received will be considered when the scheme is reviewed.
