Penistone Road / Hillfoot Bridge junction

Stop line at Hillfoot Bridge

As part of helping traffic move better on Penistone Road we have changed how traffic lights control vehicles turning left on to Neepsend Lane.  This work has now been completed and has included an improved surface on Penistone Road and Neepsend Lane.

Reasons for the scheme

The new junction layout separates left turning traffic from the main flow of traffic.  This will allow vehicles to continue into the city, while vehicles wait to turn left into Neepsend Lane.

The bigger plan

Penistone Road (from Salt Box Lane in Grenoside through to Shalesmoor) is one of a number of Key Routes that have been identified for improvements through the South Yorkshire Congestion Delivery Plan.

The road is the second busiest route into the City after Parkway and is currently used by between 25,000 and 50,000 vehicles per day. One of the goals within the Congestion Delivery Plan is to improve journey times for all vehicles using this important route.

This improvement to the junction with Neepsend Lane is separate from the Penistone Road Smart Route proposals to improve traffic flow on the road.  This major scheme is still being developed following helpful feedback from members of the public.

Further works

The remaining tasks within the scheme relate to landscaping. Five of the trees in the central reservation have been removed, but they will be replaced with suitable specimens in November 2009.  Additional planting will also be used in the area as a part of the improved street scene plan being developed for Penistone Road.

Thank you for your patience during the period of these works.
