Connecting Sheffield

Sheffield’s city centre is vital to creating a prosperous South Yorkshire region. Getting in and out of the city centre (by road, bus, rail, supertram, cycle, or on foot) should therefore be as easy as possible.

A number of projects have recently taken place as part of an overall 'Connect Sheffield' initiative to help you travel to and move around the city centre more easily and to improve its public areas.

The following are changes to how information is provided:

  • Information panels, particularly for pedestrians, around the city centre with key locations and how to get there.  The image on the right shows a standard panel with another in the background (next to a bus stop) about using public tranport
  • Improved road signs
  • Electronic messaging panels giving drivers information about congestion and available parking
  • Clear, joined up information about transport and visitor attractions
  • All junctions on the Inner Relief Road have been numbered and marked with a strong landmark feature for ease of direction
  • Electronic ‘Variable Message’ signs will provide up-to-date information on where car park spaces are available

See our Travel Information page for internet information about getting in and around Sheffield.

Schemes

Howard Street Water feature
The following are schemes that were included in the Connect Sheffield initiative.

Inner Relief Road - new roads (including cycling and pedestrian routes) helping traffic move easier to the north of the city centre.

Public Transport Information Interchanges - places where you can get real-time information on services, clearer timetables and access to phone and dataweb touchscreens. Some also have staffed information kiosks, vending facilities, public toilets and general visitor information - all contained in new, distinctive shelters.  For details of current interchanges see the Travel South Yorkshire website.

Sheffield Railway Station - work to the new public space outside the station and Sheaf Square in general included better access to the station (in particular for pedestrians) along with distinctive water features

Pedestrian schemes - Many improvements to spaces and routes for pedestrians have been made.  Barkers Pool has been transformed into a paved area with new trees and water features that enhance the look of the City Hall.  Howard Street leads people arriving by train from Sheaf Square towards the city centre.  It has been paved (dark down the middle and light down the sides), newly lit and lined with trees, seating areas and has a water feature running alongside it (see image above).
