Why camera enforcement at Hillsborough?
Why is the City Council undertaking camera enforcement of bus and tram gates at Hillsborough?
Sheffield people have repeatedly told us that the speed and reliability of public transport has to be improved to make it more attractive. The delays caused by motorists blocking the tram gates at Hillsborough have a knock-on effect on public transport punctuality and reliability across the City, causing delay and uncertainty for thousands of passengers every day at, for example, Meadowhall, Crystal Peaks and Halfway as well as at Hillsborough itself. This is the main purpose of camera enforcement, to improve public transport punctuality and journey times.
Many bus and tram users are car owners and many others are potential future car drivers. It is therefore essential that measures are taken to retain existing passengers, otherwise in the future there would be more people switching from public transport to car. Traffic congestion would become worse and the quality of public transport would decline, as fewer passengers would result in less revenue and ultimately a poorer and more expensive service. This is a future that would be in nobody's interests, including existing motorists. It is a scenario that deprives people of choice, restricting the mobility of those who don’t have access to a car and leaves those who do have access to a car with no option but to drive. A future where more passengers are attracted to use public transport will benefit all, including those who have to, or choose to, drive.
