Bus and tram lane/gate enforcement
CCTV cameras are recording the registration number of any vehicle using or stopping in bus and tram lanes/gates - starting with Hillsborough. This means that if you are caught on camera during hours of operation, you will receive a Penalty Charge Notice and a fine of up to £60.
A lane is a separate strip on the road for buses to use and a gate is where a separate set of traffic lights let through the bus or tram.
To pay a fine see the Pay a Council Bill page. You can pay early to pay less and challenge a fine - see the Penalty Charge Notice and Challenge a fine pages.
Why does the Council fine for this?
The Council and its partners want to make public transport more reliable and punctual and encourage more public transport use to reduce congestion and help the environment. One way to achieve this is to have a gate or lane that lets buses and trams through separately to most other traffic. So that they work we need to make sure that only the vehicles allowed to travel through do so, which is why we use camera enforcement.
Who can use a lane or gate?
Bus lanes separate buses and authorised vehicles such as taxis, emergency services and bicycles from other vehicles, giving priority to buses. Motorcycles can use bus lanes but not bus gates. This is because of recent signing changes to meet Department for Transport and Adjudicator requirements.
What's happening in Hillsborough?
Camera enforcement of bus lanes and tram gates in Sheffield is being introduced in stages. The first stage was the introduction of camera enforcement at the Hillsborough bus and tram gates in June 2007. Download the 'Free the Sheffield buses and trams' leaflet below or see the Frequently Asked Questions page for more information.
We relaxed restrictions in Hillsborough in 2009. The bus and tram gates are now in operation for fewer hours each day making it easier for you to shop in and visit Hillsborough.
The times of operation are now:
- Monday to Saturday 7am-11am; 3pm-7pm
- Sundays are now free from restrictions
Whether you are visiting Hillsborough to shop, take in a visit to the library or the park, there are plenty of places to park including a free car park at Hillsborough Barracks. See the map at the bottom of this page of where you can park and the locations of the bus and tram gates.
Public transport options include buses, the tram, Park & Ride facilities for the tram at Malin Bridge and Middlewood and a frequent Supertramlink bus service for people coming from Stocksbridge, Deepcar, Wharncliffe Side and Oughtibridge.
