Bus Lane Enforcement
CCTV cameras are recording the registration number of any vehicle driving, parking or stopping in particular bus lanes and tram gates - starting with Hillsborough. This means that if you are caught on camera during hours of operation, you will receive a penalty charge notice and a fine of up to £60.
Download the 'Free the Sheffield buses and trams' leaflet below or see the Frequently Asked Questions page for more information.
Every year millions of journeys are made by people travelling throughout Sheffield on public transport. Sheffield City Council and its partners want to improve public transport by making it more reliable and punctual. One way to achieve this is by bus lane enforcement.
Bus lanes separate buses and authorised vehicles such as taxis, emergency services and bikes from other vehicles, giving priority to buses. Bus and tram ‘gates’ allow buses, trams and authorised vehicles to use lengths of road that other traffic cannot.
These features, when properly enforced, improve journey times and reliability and make public transport a more attractive travel option both for existing and would-be public transport users. They are needed because fewer people on public transport would mean more cars on the road and more congestion.
Camera enforcement of bus lanes and tram gates in Sheffield will be introduced in stages. The first stage was the introduction of camera enforcement at the Hillsborough bus and tram gates in June 2007.
What to do if you receive a Penalty Charge Notice
If you are caught on camera:
- The council will send a Penalty Charge Notice to the vehicle’s registered keeper
- If you feel that a Penalty Charge has been issued incorrectly, you can challenge it by writing to the address printed on the reverse of the Notice
- The charge is £60, reduced to £30 if paid within 14 days. Please take immediate action to either pay the Penalty Charge or to register a challenge.
- If either an appeal or payment is not received within 28 days then the fine will be increased to £90
You can pay in the following ways:
- On Line: using debit/credit cards - 'Pay a bill' web page
- By Post: Parking Services, PO Box 3830, Sheffield S1 9AQ (cheques payable to Sheffield City Council)
- In Person: Sheffield City Council, Howden House, 1 Union Street, Sheffield S1 2SH (Monday - Friday, 8.30am - 5.30pm)

For anyone wishing to travel into Hillsborough or into Sheffield, why not use the Park & Ride facilities located at Malin Bridge and Middlewood instead and then hop onto the Supertram for the rest of the journey? If you live in Stocksbridge, Deepcar, Wharncliffe Side or Oughtibridge there is an exciting new Supertramlink bus service, which operates at a 10 minute frequency. You can use the same ticket on the bus as for the tram. For all other travel information go to travelsouthyorkshire.com or phone travel line on 01709 515151 (open daily 7am-10pm).
Benefits to people in Sheffield
There are a number of benefits from effective bus lane enforcement:
- Improved bus and tram punctuality, increased road safety and more use of bus lanes by cyclists
- More consistent journey times for buses through congested areas
- These measures will encourage existing public transport users to stick with the bus or tram and give incentives for others to switch to more environmentally friendly forms of travel and thereby reduce CO2 emissions.
