Walking Bus
A "walking bus" is a group of children walking to school under the supervision of at least two trained adults, one leading the group (driver) and one at the rear (conductor)
There are six walking buses in Sheffield. These are at Nethergreen Infants School, Nethergreen Junior School, Norfolk Primary School, Hunters Bar Infants School, Hunters Bar Junior School and Anns Grove Primary School. There are also a further seven schools currently developing bus routes.
Walking buses have many benefits, they promote fitness, they develop a child's road safety skills and awareness, they reduce congestion and school gate parking, and provide an enjoyable, sociable and fun journey to school.
If you would like to set up a walking bus you will need a co-ordinator to ensure that the scheme runs smoothly, this can be a parent or member of staff at the school. Adult volunteers will also be needed to run the bus and a route should be set depending on where interested families live and the suitability of the route.
There is an information pack available called 'The Walking Bus' which contains advice and step by step guidance on the process of setting up a walking bus.
Please contact the Road Safety Officer at Sheffield City Council on 0114 273 6162 or by e-mail at road_safety@sheffield.gov.uk who will offer support and guidance, and help you with route advice, suitable numbers, yellow jackets, health and safety and insurance.
