Road Safety

The Road Safety Group aims to tackle many different types of road safety issues and has members from a variety of backgrounds with a range of skills and experience. Our work falls into distinct themes:

Reducing accidents - we keep statistical records so we can look at where and how often road accidents are happening and take action to reduce the number of people injured at these places. We deal with all the requests from residents who want to make their roads safer.

Safety Cameras – to address accidents caused by speeding drivers.

Safer Routes to School - to encourage, and make it safe for, children to walk to school.

Child Pedestrian Training – to provide children with roadside pedestrian skills.

Safety Audits – all significant traffic/highway schemes have road safety audits.  These are not design checks but checks on whether properly applied standards can combine to produce a layout similar to others where accidents have occurred.  For this reason audits are carried out by people experienced in road accident investigation and prevention.  Auditors view designs from the perspective of all types of road users.  There are four stages of audit: feasibility, detailed design, pre opening/completion and finally accident record checks after one and three years.

Safer Cycling - Road Safety Officers work in selected schools and with volunteer groups to give cycle training.

Publicity -  we distribute posters and leaflets to schools and businesses giving road safety advice. The Group takes part in Government led national road safety campaigns.

Motorcycle Safety - BikeSafe course: 50% off!
Sheffield Education Training and Publicity is promoting further training for motorcycle riders by offering subsidised places on the BikeSafe rider assessment days run by SY Police. Usually the course costs £50 per person, but you could get the chance to attend for half price. Fill in the questionnaire at the bottom of this page, then save and email it to road_safety@sheffield.gov.uk for a chance to be selected.
