Public Transport Organisations
Sheffield City Council is one of many organisations involved with developing public transport in the city. Read on to get an overview of who they are.
Operators
Public transport in Sheffield and the county is run by several different public transport operating companies. This includes First, the largest bus service provider, and Stagecoach who run buses and trams. TM Travel and Sheffield Community Transport also run bus services.
Comments about particular services can be made to the relevant operator (via the links above).
South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive
South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE) is the government organisation responsible for developing the network and services across the county. Its roles include:
- Providing bus/tram stops and their facilities (e.g. timetable information)
- Running five Park & Ride sites
- Providing bus services in rural communities as well as the Free Bee bus in the city centre
- Information, awareness and advice to people and organisations about using public transport
- Providing Traveline - the internet and phone service for finding out when and where to use public transport
- Providing YourNextBus - the mobile phone texting service for finding out when your next bus is actually going to come
- Making available South Yorkshire tickets, such as the TravelMaster
For comments about public transport in general contact SYPTE directly.
South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Authority
The South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Authority (SYPTA) consists of Councillors from the four District Councils in South Yorkshire including Sheffield City Council. It is the transport authority responsible for coordinating and promoting the use of public transport in South Yorkshire. Its work is carried out by the South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive.
Sheffield City Council
Sheffield City Council is the highway authority. It works in partnership with the SYPTE and the public transport operating companies in order to promote the objectives of the South Yorkshire Local Transport Plan.
The goals of the Local Transport Plan for public transport are:
- That it should provide a realistic alternative to the car
- To support modal shift (less travel by car and more by other means)
- Provide quality transport for those without use of a car
- To support social inclusion (e.g. the ability to get to work and meet with other people)
- Provide good public transport services, linking businesses with employees and customers, to support sustainable access
As highway authority, the Council advances these aims by:
- Traffic management measures to improve the punctuality of public transport - these include introducing intelligent transport systems using real-time, bus lanes, bus gates, and junction improvements
- Enforcement of traffic regulations - including camera enforcement of bus lanes and bus gates
- Accessible bus stops - this includes bus stop clearways and raised kerbs, so that buses can get to the stop and passengers can get on and off with minimal changes of level
- Bringing these improvements together as packages along the main bus routes (for example, the S10, Sheaf Valley and North Sheffield Smart Routes)
