Work Place Travel Plans
These pages aim to give you advice on how to develop your organisation's travel plan on a voluntary basis or as part of a planning application. For school travel see the School Travel Plans page.
What is a Travel Plan?
Organisations develop travel plans to manage employee travel, and any other travel to and from its sites, especially to reduce congestion and help the environment.
A travel plan is a tailored package of measures for commuter journeys, business trips and freight deliveries. Travel needs of the organisation, site and local area can be addressed through the plan but at the core are measures to reduce the need to travel, reduce reliance on the car and promote sustainable travel (bus, cycle, walk, car share).
With increasing levels of traffic, congestion and vehicle emissions (linked to air quality and climate change) travel plans are becoming evermore important. Organisations can also find them useful for reducing travel costs, improving employee health, managing demand for parking spaces and making it easier for journeys to be made to and from their sites.
How do I develop a Travel Plan?
Before writing your travel plan document contact the Travel Plans team - see details below. There will be useful information and advice we can give you to help develop an effective travel plan which meets the Council's standards.
For a written document outlining the Council's requirements for a Travel Plan (particularly relating to planning applications) download the Council's Travel Plan Guidance from the Planning section of this website.
See also the Monitoring Guidance below for how organisations are asked to measure progress of their travel plan. There is also a simple survey template below to help the organisation find out how its employees travel and a questionnaire for the organisation itself to guide it through areas it needs to consider.
For resources that can be used for developing a travel plan, including match-funding, the car share scheme and the Car Club, see the Resources page.
You can also find out more about our own Council Travel Plan.
