School Travel Plan Funding
128 of the City’s schools now have their School Travel Plan adopted by Sheffield City Council, and have received funding from the Department for Transport and Department for Children Schools and Families. Funding is around £5,000 for Primary schools and around £10,000 for Secondary schools with a potential 100% match funding provided by Sheffield’s Local Transport Plan. The funding is designed to help the schools fund capital items and projects that will help to facilitate and encourage sustainable travel choices.

Capital Grant Spend
To date, the School Travel Plan Initiative has brought over ¾ million pounds in capital funding for Sheffield schools. Many schools have spent their grant on pedestrian shelters, providing somewhere dry for parents to wait in inclement weather and somewhere shady when it’s hot. The example pictured is at Owler Brook Nursery Infant school, the children really like the large pencil design. Other schools have spent their money on installing secure cycle (& scooter) storage, enabling pupils to cycle to school.
Match funding spend
A potential 100% match to a schools capital grant is offered to further encourage and enable pupils and staff to travel sustainably. The match funding can be spent on or off the school grounds, allowing schools to improve the school entrance, routes to school or specific problem areas in the near vacinity. As an example, Brook House Junior School spent their match funding on bollards, barrier rail and cross hatching at the school entrance (see picture). This prevents people parking and blocking the school entrance as well as nearby footpaths which then makes it easier and safer for those walking and cycling to school.
Other schools have installed new signage, double yellow lines, cycle storage, lockers, CCTV, new footpaths and access points to school.
