School Travel Plans
What is a School Travel Plan?
A School Travel Plan is a document produced by pupils, parents, school staff and governors, in partnership with the community and Sheffield City Council, to manage its methods and resources for getting children to and from school safely. All schools must have a plan by 2010.
The main reason for writing a School Travel Plan is to reduce the number of cars on the school run and encourage other modes of transport such as walking, cycling and public transport. However, this is by no means their only aim. They should also include realistic and achievable aims that will improve children’s health and safety, education, the school environment and help in combating social exclusion.
Government funding is available through Sheffield City Council specifically to help schools achieve its School Travel Plan objectives and targets. This is approximately £5,000 per primary school and £10,000 for a secondary school, depending on size. The funding is accessed by the completion and submission of a School Travel Plan which must fulfil certain national criteria.

Getting to School
We are working to improve children and young people's journey to school. The Sustainable Modes of Travel Strategy for Home to School Journeys sets out how we will encourage and enable environmentally sustainable travel.
