Transport Policy
Plans
Sheffield City Council is working in partnership with other organisations to make travelling in Sheffield easier and safer, to increase choice and to make your journey a more reliable, comfortable and pleasurable experience.
There are two plans that set out how transport will be developed in Sheffield between 2006 and 2011 - the South Yorkshire Local Transport Plan and the Plan for Transport in Sheffield.
Local Transport Plan
The second South Yorkshire Local Transport Plan (LTP2) was published in March 2006 and is the transport strategy for the development of the transport network in South Yorkshire up to 2011. See the Local Transport Plan page for more information.
Plan for Transport in Sheffield
The Plan for Transport in Sheffield is about transport development in Sheffield and is part of the Local Transport Plan. See the Plan for Transport in Sheffield page for more information.
Other local policies
The delivery of transport improvements is based around the South Yorkshire Local Transport Plan. But transport development is also linked with other local policies where it benefits or benefits from other areas of work - an integrated approach.
- Regional Spatial Strategy - The Yorkshire and Humber Plan
- Sheffield Development Framework
- The City Strategy
Regional Spatial Strategy
This is about new housing and employment and broadly how it will be developed in Yorkshire and Humber areas. It includes how transport will support such development (through the Regional Transport Strategy). The strategy also looks at important environmental aspects such as enhancing the countryside and how waste is dealt with.
The strategy covers the period up to 2021 and will be formally adopted in Autumn 2007, subject to testing by the Secretary of Sate through an Examination in Public. For more information on regional policies see the Government Office for Yorkshire and Humber website.
Sheffield Development Framework
The Sheffield Development Framework will set out how the Council will guide development in the city up to 2021. This includes housing and business development and takes into account how transport will support this. It will succeed the current Unitary Development Plan and will fit in with the Regional Spatial Strategy. The Sheffield Development Framework will be adopted by September 2009 subject to a Public Examination.
City Strategy
The City Strategy 2005-10, available on the Sheffield First website, outlines the strategy for the economic growth of Sheffield. One of the key aspects of this strategy is providing a high quality public transport network.
We also work closely with the Highways Agency ensuring that we have good transport links with the motorway network and to ensure that air quality in Sheffield is not negatively affected by the proximity of the motorway.
