Accessibility Planning
Accessibility is about whether people can travel to places they need to easily. This page explains this further and has more information about the survey, which was carried out in Brightside Shiregreen in January/February 2008.
In 2003, the Government’s Social Exclusion Unit did a major study called Making the Connections (pdf, 123Kb). It found that people who experienced social exclusion had poor access to transport and other facilities. This meant that as well as finding it difficult to get to important places like healthcare, leisure and retail, education, and employment, their opportunities could also be limited by lack of access to transport.
In order to address this, a key part of the Second South Yorkshire Local Transport Plan (LTP2) is the Accessibility Strategy. It has the main aim of providing: ‘good access to jobs, services and facilities for well-being, and providing prosperous, inclusive and sustainable communities’. As part of this we are developing local accessibility strategies by working with local groups and the community in different parts of the City.
The aim is to make it easier for people to get around their area and get to important places like the doctors, schools, the shops, training and jobs.
Local Accessibility Strategies
Initially we are focussing on Neighbourhood Regeneration areas to develop strategies to improve local accessibility. Southey Owlerton was the first area to be looked at as part of the LTP2.
The Southey Owlerton Accessibility Strategy was developed, for 2007–2012, in partnership with South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE), Southey Owlerton Area Regeneration (SOAR) Board and Southey Owlerton Area Panel. The strategy can be viewed or downloaded below. It can also be accessed on the SOAR website. The strategy is being carried out through a series of annual action plans.
The next local accessibility strategy to be developed is for the Brightside Shiregreen area in partnership with SYPTE and the Brightside Shiregreen Area Panel. Local consultation has been carried out, including a workshop and a questionnaire, which was delivered to all homes and businesses in the area - Getting around Brightside Shiregreen (2007/08).
Thanks to all those who replied. We had a fantastic response with over 2000 people completing the questionnaire. The results can be downloaded below. We will be using the findings to help us to develop an Accessibility Strategy for the area.
This page will be updated with further details as the Strategy is developed.
