Dropped Kerbs (Vehicular Crossings)

Information on Domestic Vehicular Crossings

Under section 184 of the Highways Act 1980, if you want to construct a new vehicular access (also called a 'dropped crossing') to your property, you need permission from the Highway Authority to do so.

If the location of the proposed vehicular crossing is on a classified (an A, B or C road), in a Conservation Area or is a Listed Building you will also need planning permission, which you will need to apply for separately, please contact Planning enquiries on telephone number (0114) 2734215

It is against the law for a vehicle to cross a footway other than via a properly constructed crossing.

You can download a full copy of the guidance notes below.

Once we have received an application from you (you can download this form below) we will inspect the site to see that it is suitable.

If the site is suitable, we will then give you approval and provide you with a list of approved contractors who can undertake the work for you.  However should you wish to use any other contractor then the Authority must approve them in advance of the works being carried out.

You will then need to notify us when the work will be undertaken so that we can carry out an inspection to ensure that it has been carried out to a satisfactory standard.

Should you wish to inspect the documents associated with Section 184 of the Highways Act 1980, get information about Light Industrial Crossings or have any other queries, please contact the Vehicular Crossings Officer on (0114) 2736136 or via email derek.mayland@sheffield.gov.uk.

Please Note:

  1. If you live in a Council owned property, you should seek permission from Housing Services at your Local Area Office for a hard standing or garage before continuing with this application.
  2. Your application will not be acknowledged and will usually take 8-10 weeks to process.
  3. A receipt for the application will be included with our permission or refusal.
