Northern General Hospital Permit Parking Scheme

As car ownership, use and demand for on-street parking space increases, there have been growing calls for the introduction of permit parking schemes, especially around district shopping centres and hospitals.  In December 2009 we sent questionnaires to people around the Northern General Hospital asking whether they thought a scheme there would be a good idea or not.  Download the results at the bottom of the page.

About the scheme

Any scheme introduced will be designed to provide a mixture of different types of parking.   Permit parking bays are provided for residents, visitors and business users who have a valid permit for their vehicle.

The introduction of a permit parking scheme would have several benefits including:

  • A better chance of residents and businesses being able to park near their property
  • Fewer motorists entering the area in search of parking spaces
  • Reduced air and noise pollution
  • Fewer blocked driveways
  • Improved access for emergency and community transport vehicles

The parking problems around the Northern General have been brought to our attention by local residents who have reported a worsening of the situation in recent months.

How we are involving you

We asked the people around the Northern General Hospital in December 2009 about the possibility of a scheme in the area.  The 31 January 2010 closing date of the questionnaire survey has now passed and the initial consultation is closed.  You can view the results of the transport survey around the Northern General Hospital at the bottom of this page where there are also maps showing street by street responses to the questions on the postcard questionnaire.

The replies will now be analysed in detail over the next couple of months to help us assess the amount of support for a permit parking scheme and to decide where it might be appropriate.

More consultation will follow giving everyone the chance to influence or object to any proposals as they progress.
