Salt Bins

Winter scene in Sheffield
This year (2009/10) 1,750 salt (grit) bins will be provided across the city.

Up to last winter (2008/09) there were 1700 salt (grit) bins provided across the city, most of them on minor roads, footpaths and pedestrian areas for people to use on a self-help basis.

So you could use a shovel and spread some salt on the roads and pavements and help the community.

An A to Z listing of salt bin locations is available as a document to download at the bottom of this page.

Each year requests for new salt bins from members of the public are prioritised in the autumn against the following criteria and 50 new bins are provided for the top priorities.   Any unsuccessful requests are included in the following year’s prioritisation process.

Criteria for provision of salt bins

On roads we salt (the Precautionary Salting Network):

Salt bins are not normally provided, except at locations where, in times of snow, queuing traffic may encounter problems, eg steep slopes leading to junctions, traffic signals and roundabouts.

On roads we do not salt, bins may be provided at:

  • Roads with steep gradients, bad bends, drainage problems, exposed sites and difficult junctions
  • Locations used extensively by the elderly, infirm or very young
  • Rural roads providing access to isolated properties

Salt bins are not provided or maintained free of charge on unadopted highways, car parks or private property.  However they can be supplied on receipt of an order, please telephone 2736523 for prices.
