Winter scene in Sheffield

At a glance - what we do

Between October and April we salt and clear snow from the roads more than 60 times in a typical winter. This is mostly done at night, so many people aren't even aware of it.

The Council is in direct contact with our forecast provider and gets weather forecasts each day, with updates as necessary. This information is used in conjunction with our own computerised ice detection system and if frost, ice or snow is likely then we move into action.

Sheffield's ‘precautionary salting network’ covers 59% of the city roads and is based on national criteria. The network is covered by 27 priority routes (9 primary routes covering 402km and an additional 18 secondary routes covering 757km).

Extra help

If the weather is particularly bad Street Force workers are diverted from their normal daily work onto bad weather duties. They are also on call round-the-clock from home.

Salt Bins

But people can help themselves and their neighbours too. Up to last winter there were 1700 grit bins provided across the city, most of them on minor roads, footpaths and pedestrian areas for people to use on a self-help basis. This winter a further 50 new grit bins will be provided following requests from the public.
