Missing or Dead Animals

Dead Animals

It is an unfortunate and sad fact that many animals are killed on Sheffield’s roads.  They include wild creatures such as foxes, hedgehogs and birds and sometimes pet dogs and cats.

Street Force will remove large dead animals from the highway (road, pavement or verge) within 24 hours. We try to remove them on the same day we receive the report.

All animals are taken to Olive Grove Depot where pets are scanned to check for an ID Chip.  If a chip is detected the owners will be contacted.  The animals are stored in a refrigerated store for 3 days during which time owners can call and collect them if they wish.  After 3 days a local pet crematorium disposes of the animal.

Badgers

The Protection of Badgers Act 1992 makes it illegal for any person to kill, injure or damage a Badger sett.  It is also an offence to have a dead Badger.

If you see a dead Badger you can help Street Force assist the South Yorkshire Badger Group by contacting them on their 24 hour helpline (07722) 590184.  In turn they will investigate the cause of its death, collect relevant information and work with Street Force to arrange for its removal.

Further information about the work done by the group can be found on the South Yorkshire Badger Group web site.

Reporting Dead and Lost Animals

If you have lost a dog or a cat please phone the Contact Centre on (0114) 273 4567 or e-mail: streetforce@sheffield.gov.uk to check if we have collected any dead animals from your area.  A description (colour, markings, does it have a collar) should be sufficient for us to tell you if we have it.  If we have, you can make arrangements to collect your pet or we will arrange to have it cremated.

If you want to report a dead animal on or near the highway, please call the Contact Centre (0114) 273 4567 giving the location and description if possible.

For animals found in other locations (not on the highway), please contact Environmental Services on (0114) 203 7410 or e-mail: environmentalservicesadmin@sheffield.gov.uk
