Gateways To The City
What Are Gateway Routes?
The main roads into Sheffield are known as 'Gateway routes'. They are dual carriageways and ‘A’ roads which the majority of people visiting Sheffield will use. The visual appearance of the routes is vitally important. The City of Sheffield needs to look tidy and give good first impression to encourage investment, shoppers and visitors as well as providing an attractive pleasant environment for its residents.
What We Do
Due to the very high traffic volume using Gateways the amount of litter discarded tends to be more than on other roads. Unfortunately the heavy traffic causes problems when we need to litter pick the routes. We have Safe Systems of Work so that our staff can clear litter safely from the sides of dual carriageways and high-speed roads but on some routes clearing the central reservations is dangerous. We usually carry out the work on a Sunday and one lane of the carriageway has to be coned off.
Mechanical sweepers clean the carriageways and footpaths weekly or fortnightly. During the winter months the mechanical sweeping is sometimes delayed so that we don't remove grit which has been spread on the road to combat ice and snow.
In addition to mechanical sweeping, all routes are inspected by a litter picking team once every three weeks and any litter on the grass verges and shrub beds adjacent to the highway is removed.
The routes are also inspected once per week for graffiti and fly posters. Any posters and graffiti found on Council owned property are cleaned off.
Posters and graffiti on private buildings is the responsibility of the owner. Owners of private buildings along Gateway routes are encouraged to play their part in improving and maintaining the look of the Streetscene by sponsoring litterbins, floral displays and by becoming a member of the Sheffield Graffiti Charter.
Known hot-spots for litter are cleared once a week to try and ensure that accumulations do not build up.
Detailed records are kept of dates and the time it takes to litter pick, sweep and remove graffiti which helps us to programme an area's future cleaning needs. We try to respond to local variations such as football matches at Hillsborough and Bramall Lane and other events at the Arena, Don Valley Stadium, etc. so that litter removal takes place just after rather than just before fixtures.
