Street Cleaning in the City Centre

Sheffield Town Hall at night

Street cleaning operations within the city centre area are carried out differently to other areas because it is visited by large numbers of people every day.

It is a vibrant dynamic environment with bars, cafés, nightclubs and theatres that attract people into the city centre at all times of the day and night.  Inevitably rubbish is discarded on the streets throughout the 24 hour period.

What We Do

Mechanical sweeping is carried out both during the day and throughout the night.  Operatives work a shift system to cover the period from 6.00am to 6.00pm Monday to Saturday and on Sunday from 7.00am to 12 noon.

Litterbins fill up particularly quickly, so we empty them as required which is often 3 or 4 times per day.  On average 80% of litter bins in the city centre are emptied more than once per day.

We have moved away from a set frequency approach.  Our operatives are responsible for their own areas within the city centre and will make the decision themselves where to clean and which bins to empty based on their extensive local knowledge of their area.  This avoids wasting resources emptying bins that are under used or sending a sweeping machine to sweep a path only to find when on site that it does not need sweeping.

Mechanical Sweeping

Mechanical sweeping on the highways in the city centre is carried out predominantly at night to avoid heavy traffic.  Between midnight and 4.30am we sweep the roads which have tram tracks.

You Can Help Us By:

  • Always putting litter in the litter bins
  • Always putting chewing gum in the bins
  • Use the ashtrays located on the top of the litter bins for cigarette ends
  • Dispose of food wrappers in the litter bins
