Chewing Gum

Chewing Gum on Paving

Blobs of chewing gum stuck to pavements is spoiling the look of streets in Sheffield.

Thoughtlessly discarded chewing gum sticks firmly to pavements.  Pedestrians walking on it squash it flat so that each piece can cover up to 5cm.  Over time it takes on a dirty grey colour and because it degrades very slowly it can remain in place for many years.

The Council aims to carry out regular chewing gum removal in the Heart of the City on footpaths and paved areas.

Removal of gum is a slow process.  The work often has to be carried out during the night to avoid pedestrians, trams and traffic.  Blobs of gum are removed one by one and after each spot of gum has been removed the whole area has to be cleaned, usually by power washing to restore an evenly cleaned grime free finish.

Unfortunately the cleaning process can sometimes remove the sand in the joints adding to the overall cost of a cleaning programme.

You Can Help

  • Keep the foil wrapper from the gum.  when you need to dispose of the gum wrap it in the wrapper and put it in a bin
  • Don't throw gum out of car windows
