Street Cleaning

A Road Sweeping Machine

Our Aim:

To ensure places where people choose to live, work and play are clean and have a good environment in line with the Council’s commitment to achieve a cleaner, greener, safer city.

Facts & Figures

  • We empty and maintain over 2,700 litter bins
  • We sweep 1,900km of roads
  • We sweep 3,400km of footpaths
  • We remove over 17,000 fly posters
  • We remove over 8,000 tonnes of litter, debris and silt from the highway every year

What we do

We clean the roads, footways, pedestrian areas and shopping areas within the Sheffield boundary.

How do we achieve this?

There are different operations we carry out in order to achieve the required standard:

Litter bins

Street Force provide litter bins adjacent to the highway and in shopping centres throughout the city.  Our aim is to empty litter bins before they reach 2/3rds full and no bin should overflow.  On shopping sites the bins will be emptied as required.

We do not maintain litter bins in parks, they are the responsibility of the Parks and Countryside section on (0114) 250 0500.

Fly tipping removal

Fly tipping is unauthorised dumping of rubbish or tipping on land where the owners do not have a waste management licence.  We are only responsible for clearing fly tipping if it is on the highway.  Fly tipping on private land is dealt with differently.  To report any accumulations on private land you can contact Environmental Services on (0114) 203 7410.  Environmental Services will contact the owner and take legal steps to get the rubbish removed, however, this can take longer on private land than from Council owned land.

Road & footpath sweeping

Regular sweeping is needed to remove debris and silt which builds up on the footpaths, highway and the channels down the side of the highway.  If debris is allowed to accumulate, weeds will grow in the silt and highway gullies will become blocked.

It is often necessary to carry out road sweeping operations at night when there are fewer vehicles using the highway.  Mechanical sweepers cannot operate at high speeds and can cause a traffic flow problem if operated at peak times.

Emergency work

Sweeping/rubbish removal works are carried out if we receive any reports of dangers within the highway.  These dangers include large items left in the highway or spillages following accidents.
