Areas where we can do better
Average time taken to remove fly tipping from street (in days)
It is pleasing to note that Q3 performance shows a significant improvement on Q2. However, this target remains very challenging.
On the whole the majority of fly tipping is cleared very quickly, following a request from a resident or the street cleansing team removing it whilst out cleaning.
The overall increase in the average time is due to the increase in large loads of fly tipping being carried out around the city. To clear these large amounts of waste which include rubble, builders waste, tyres etc the use of specialist lifting equipment is needed. These specialist vehicles are used for other work too so we book in fly tipping clearance at the earliest opportunity.
Putting matters right:
Street Force are members of the City Council’s Fly Tipping Strategic Group. This group consists of various council services and partners that have the responsibility to deal with fly tipping on the highway and in the estates.
Options that are currently being explored to tackle the problem include the use of covert surveillance, blocking off access to regular fly tipped sites and stop and search of vehicles carrying waste. It is hoped that these measures will reduce the amount of fly tipping even further.
Illegal fly tippers are being prosecuted.
