Walking

Did you know?

Walking a mile in 20 minutes uses as much energy as:
  • 10 minutes of swimming breaststroke or running a mile
  • 12 minutes of football
  • 16 minutes of cycling or aerobics
  • 17 minutes of weight training

The Council is working in a number of ways and for a variety of reasons to enable and encourage increased levels of walking in Sheffield. For example, increased levels of walking can:

  • Reduce car use and congestion
  • Make routes feel safer
  • Improve the population’s health
  • Combat social exclusion and access to services
  • Generally improve the local environment and play a role in attracting visitors to the area
