Public Rights of Way
Sheffield is a very green city with over a third of it being within the Peak District National Park. It offers superb opportunities for walking, cycling and horse riding and simply enjoying green spaces and open countryside.
The Public Rights Of Way Group is responsible for all public footpaths, bridleways and byways across the city, as well as large areas of access land.
Our paths are mainly rural, and are mainly signed from the roadside. We do not deal with urban paths with tarmac surfaces and street lights, neither do we deal with pavements or roadside verges. Please go to the Highway Maintenance page or telephone Street Force on (0114) 273 4567 regarding these paths.
We are also unable to deal with motorcyclists using Public Rights of Way unlawfully. Please contact South Yorkshire Police or telephone them on (0114) 220 2020 regarding such problems.
If you want to plan a walk, or just get a general idea of where to find our paths and access land, you are advised to buy an Ordnance Survey Explorer map which can be purchased from most good bookshops and outdoor shops. Numbers 1 and 278 cover the Sheffield area.
Our main responsibilities are:
- The Countryside And Rights Of Way Act 2000 (Open Access)
