Cyclists Tourist Club (CTC) South Yorkshire

The South Yorkshire branch of the CTC runs regular cycle rides for both novices and cyclists wanting to do longer, more challenging rides. To find out more contact the Sheffield section secretary Barry Raynor or visit the Cyclists Touring Club website.
 

ReCycleBikes

ReCycleBikes is a not-for-profit workshop that is part of the Heeley Development Trust.  It does the following:
  • Services and repairs bicycles
  • Refurbishes bicycles for resale
  • Provides lessons and courses in cycle maintenance

Wheels for All! is an initiative created by The Cycling Project for the North West which aims to give access to specialist bikes on a hire basis.  For more information contact:

Security and Insurance

To help improve security for your bike you could register your bike(s) on the Bike register. There is a fee from £5.95 for this service dependant upon the number of bikes you register.  If you are unlucky enough to have your bike stolen it can then be registered on the stolen cycle register and discounts can be offered by cycle insurers.

Cycling trails and cycle hire

 
Trans Pennine Trail - The Trans Pennine Trail is a multi-user route across the North of England from Southport to Hornsea and with a north-south route from Leeds to Chesterfield, plus a spur to York.
 
Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council - Rotherham is Sheffield’s close neighbour and is linked by road and the Trans Pennine Trail.
 
Peak District National Park Local Authority - The Peak District as a major tourist attraction is a delightful place to cycle to. Cycle Hire is available in the Peak District for those who do not currently own a bicycle. For more information you can contact the  at:
 
Rother Valley Country Park offers 6 miles of tracks which are suitable for cycling and are mainly traffic free. The park also connects directly to the Trans Pennine Trail. Cycle Hire is available from the Watersports Centre.

If you are considering combining cycle journeys with public transport trips South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE) are responsible for the strategic planning of public transport in South Yorkshire.  There is also a Cycling and Public Transport West Yorkshire website.

National organisations and initiatives

National Cycling Strategy - Sheffield is working, as are all other authorities, to help achieve a national increase in cycling levels. Promotional information is available for cycling and general information about cycling in the UK.
 
Sustrans is a national charity based in Bristol which was instrumental in developing the National Cycle Network. They provide publications on cycle route maps across the UK and advice on cycling in general.
 
Cyclists Touring Club (CTC) holds information on all aspects of cycling from providing information about insurance to holidays. They also campaign for improvements to cycling in the UK. For more information contact:

The Folding Society website is a good source of information when choosing what type of folding bike to buy.
 
A new resource is currently been developed in association with the National Cycling Strategy Team. The Cycle Journey Planner will provide suggested routes with your journey requirements in mind. The project is currently in development and will give advice on routes across England.
 
The Bike for All website is a joint initiative of the Bicycle Association and the Department for Transport via the National Cycling Strategy Board. It provides a wide range of information for cyclists and people who are thinking about starting to cycle.
