Cycling for Leisure

Getting out on your bike can be an enjoyable way to spend time with family and friends and has the added bonus of being good for you.

There are many ways you can get out on your bike in Sheffield and here are just a few.

Organised Groups

Several groups in Sheffield arrange organised rides, from beginners' rides to long distance road rides for more experienced riders. You will also find rides which are aimed at specific groups. For example there are opportunities for ladies only rides and family specific events. Keep a look out for information at your local library, the events page and local press.

Pedal Pushers and the Cyclist Touring Club organise regular rides varying in length and difficulty. For local events check the Cycling Events page.

There is often a very good social scene when cycling as a group and it can be a fun and exciting way of meeting new people.

Cycle routes

See the cycle route resources section of the Getting Around page to find out how to get around by bicycle.

The Trans Pennine Trail is a national coast to coast route crossing the Pennines and Northern England linking towns and cities including Sheffield. It’s total length is 350 miles, the coast to coast route is 215 miles.

The trail uses surfaced paths on disused railways, riversides, canals, minor roads & urban cycle lanes. It was designed for walkers and cyclists and some parts of the route are also suitable for people with disabilities and horse riders.

The Trans Pennine Trail also forms part of the National Cycle Network.

The route provides good off road rides for family days out and to help those who are less confident on bikes to practice cycling away from other traffic.

For more information on other leisure routes outside of Sheffield including the Peak District and Rother Valley Park see the Useful Cycle Contacts page.
