Cycling and Bus/Coach

There are several opportunities to link your cycle journey with bus and coach journeys even if it involves cycling to and from home to a bus stop or station. When cycling on roads you are more than likely to interact with buses, that may mean that you are using a bus lanes or simply overtaking buses at bus stops.

Cycle parking at bus stations

You will find cycle parking facilities at all Travel Information Centres and Park & Ride sites throughout South Yorkshire to encourage combined cycle, bus and rail journeys.

Bicycles on buses

In terms of cycle carriage folding bikes are permitted on most bus services, but when using buses do take care especially during peak time. There are some bike-bus services available, which are able to carry cycles from Sheffield to the Peak District. See Travel South Yorkshire for further information about these services (this link will open in a new browser window).

Cycles on coaches

You can take cycles on most coach services, but spaces must be reserved on the coach with the bike either in a cycle bag or bound up.

Sharing road space with buses

Sheffield, along with many other cities in the UK, has seen a growth in the development of bus services over the last few years. Cyclists are generally allowed to use bus lanes in Sheffield, signing of bus lanes will indicate where you can cycle. Some of the recent bus lanes also incorporate cycle lanes or where possible provide enough width for a bus to pass a bike safely.

The presence of a bus lane can provide a comfort zone for cycling in – but still take care particularly when approaching junctions as vehicles can be permitted into lanes to turn left. If you do not feel confident cycling in bus lanes then you may wish to take up some Cycle Training to improve your confidence.
