Cycling and Public Transport
Introduction
The Government has been promoting integrated transport for several years and the opportunity to take bikes on trains has improved in some areas over the last few years.
There are several options when considering using a bike and public transport. It may be that you wish to cycle as part of a daily work trip, travel by train as part of a weekend leisure trip or simply use your bike on a local basis to travel to and from the station.
Some good reasons for considering combined trips
- It may be that you wish to use a bike as part of your trip to work. Cycling to and from the train station from home could reduce your overall journey time dramatically and give you extra time in bed in the morning.
- It could be that you wish to get to the nearest tram stop quicker – although only folding bikes are permitted on trams some tram stops within Sheffield do have cycle parking available so that you can combine your journey with public transport.
- You may need your bike at both ends of your journey - a folding bike may be the best option.
- You may use a bike as part of a work journey.
- You may want to use the train as part of a longer bike ride out in the countryside.

Guide on how to take your bicycle on public transport
'Bicycles and public transport in South Yorkshire' leaflet is aimed at making it easier for cyclists to travel on public transport.
It can be picked up at Travel Information Centres, Interchanges, Rail Stations, Tourist Information Centres, University and Council buildings. Alternatively go to the Travel South Yorkshire website or call Traveline on 01709 515151.
The leaflet outlines everything you need to know about taking a bike on public transport and offers advice on which buses, trains and trams are able to carry cycles. It also gives details of how to pre-book a cycle place before travelling and lists which Railway Stations, Interchanges and Park and Ride sites have cycle parking facilities, how many and how to find them on arrival.
