  • Managing the annual programme of transport schemes, providing advice on requests for new schemes
  • Promoting awareness of links between transport, health and the environment
  • Providing guidance about Travel Plans for schools, businesses and other major traffic generators

  • Maintaining the flow of traffic around the city
  • Preliminary design of transport and traffic schemes
  • Traffic Management advice
  • Effecting changes in the way traffic uses the city’s roads through the careful use of traffic signing and road markings
  • Permit parking scheme development

Highway Regulations and Coordination

Manager: David Butcher
 
  • Coordinating all works on the highway working closely with other organisations to ensure that any disruption is kept to a minimum.
  • Issuing permissions and licences to work on, under or over the highway
  • Responsible for temporary highway closures and diversions.
  • Dealing with most contraventions of and enforcement of highway law

Traffic Information and Control

Manager: Peter Bull
 
  • Operating, maintaining and developing the city's Intelligent Transport System - traffic signals, signalled pedestrian crossings, variable message signs, traffic CCTV cameras, vehicle monitors, public transport priority measures and the Urban Traffic Control (UTC) system
  • Reviewing traffic signal timings and linking plans
  • Assessing the impact of modifications and developments on the traffic network
