What is Building for Life?

Jointly promoted by the Comission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE) and the Home Builders Federation, Building for Life is a set of 20 questions, or criteria, devised to help meet the housing aspirations set out in the Government’s guidance statement, Planning Policy Statement (PPS) 3.

How will it be used?

The Building for Life (BfL) model of residential design excellence is being used in Sheffield as our quality standard for measuring residential development proposals.

A two-stage approach encourages developers to address structural issues at an early stage.

Any major residential development (schemes over 10 dwellings) will be subject to an initial assessment, with 10 key questions taken from the BfL model. The purpose of this is to issue an early report to the applicant, identifying key issues that need to be addressed.

The outcome of the appraisal will be recorded as a BfL Initial Appraisal report and normally be sent to the applicant as an appendix with a covering letter.

Stage 2 is a Detailed Appraisal carried out if there are further issues to be addressed in more detail. This stage may not always be necessary and will depend on the nature and complexity of a particular scheme.
