Ecclesfield Conservation Area
Background
The concept of conservation areas was initiated in 1967 through the Civic Amenities Act, which placed a duty on Local Planning Authorities to designate “areas of special architectural or historic interest the character or appearance of which it is desirable to preserve or enhance”.
In Sheffield, 39 conservation areas have been designated across the city since 1967. A conservation area is based upon the quality and interest of an area rather than just that of individual buildings. This would include the historic layout of property boundaries and streets, which indicate the origins and growth of settlements or characteristic materials and landscaping.
Conservation Area Appraisals and Management Proposals
The Local Planning Authority has a duty to periodically review its historic areas and to publish proposals for their future preservation and enhancement. This is being done through the production of two documents for each conservation area in the city. The documents are called Conservation Area Appraisals and Conservation Area Management Proposals.
A Conservation Area Appraisal defines what contributes to the special character of an area that is important to preserve or enhance and highlights any issues that may require further action.
The Conservation Area Management Proposals take the findings of the appraisal and present recommendations that will help to preserve and enhance the area in the future.
Below are links to download the Conservation Area Appraisal and Management Proposals. Both documents were subject to a period of public consultation between 25th June 2007 and 20th July 2007 and were adopted by the Council on 23rd October 2007.
Results of the consultation are available on our consultation and surveys page.
