Dore Conservation Area
Background
The concept of conservation areas was initiated in 1967 through the Civic Amenities Act, which placed a duty on Local Planning Authorities to designate “areas of special architectural or historic interest the character or appearance of which it is desirable to preserve or enhance”.
In Sheffield, 39 conservation areas have been designated across the City since 1967. A conservation area is based upon the quality and interest of an area rather than just that of individual buildings. This would include the historic layout of property boundaries and streets, which indicate the origins and growth of settlements, or the use of characteristic materials and landscaping.
Policy Background
The policies that relate to all conservation areas are set out in the Sheffield Unitary Development Plan (UDP), which is the statutory development plan for Sheffield, adopted in March 1998. The UDP will be replaced over the next few years by the Sheffield Development Framework (SDF), which will become the City’s portfolio of local development documents, collectively covering the whole of the Sheffield District except for the area in the Peak Park. The UDP and emerging SDF are available to view on the Forward and Area Planning pages.
Conservation Area Appraisals and Management Proposals
The Local Planning Authority has a duty to periodically review its historic areas and to publish proposals for their future preservation and enhancement. This is being done through the production of two documents for each conservation area in the City. The documents are called Conservation Area Appraisals and Conservation Area Management Proposals.
A Conservation Area Appraisal defines what contributes to the special character of an area that is important to preserve or enhance and highlights any issues that may require further action. The Conservation Area Management Proposals take the findings of the appraisal and present recommendations that will help to preserve and enhance the area in the future.

If you are interested in putting forward your comments on the Conservation Area appraisal and/or management proposals then you will need to send your comments back to us by 28th November 2008. A half day drop-in session has been arranged with an opportunity to discuss the appraisals, management plans and other conservation issues with conservation officers from the Council. The drop-in will be held on Tuesday 14 October 2008 at Totley Library, 205 Baslow Road from 1.30 to 5.30 pm.
