South Yorkshire Sites and Monuments Record
The Sites and Monuments Record (SMR) holds information on the known archaeological sites and finds in South Yorkshire. Details of over 5000 sites have already been recorded and work is continuing to add even more. Monuments recorded in the SMR can be of any form or period. Examples include Mesolithic and Neolithic flint scatters; Iron Age and Romano-British cropmark sites; medieval earthworks; standing buildings and industrial sites - including mills, quarries and factories. Well over one hundred of these sites are Scheduled Ancient Monuments (SAMs), which are protected by law under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act 1979.
Archaeologists, members of the public and local groups
and societies gather data for the SMR. Information is then
added to the SMR by SYAS staff.
