We are pleased to announce publication of the latest volume in our ‘Archaeology in South Yorkshire’ series. Copies can be requested by downloading an order form at the bottom of this page.

‘Archaeology in South Yorkshire’ was started to make the results of local archaeological projects available to all. The volumes include all the projects undertaken in Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield that were reported to the South Yorkshire Archaeology Service (SYAS) in the years covered.

The latest volume covers the period of April 2003 to March 2005 (two financial years). SYAS made recommendations on an unprecedented number of planning applications during this time, leading to a large number of archaeological projects being conducted as part of the planning process. We also embarked on our flagship Historic Environment Characterisation Project. The results of the pilot phase of this work are also reported.

In addition, results are presented from important research projects undertaken outside the framework of the planning system. These include

excavation of a rare Neolithic trackway on Hatfield Moors
work on the Iron Age marsh fort at Sutton Common
research into the Ice Age archaeology of the Creswell Crags Limestone Heritage Area
fieldwork by the Friends of Ecclesall Wood
fieldwork by the Friends of the Porter Valley, Sheffield
Doncaster Archaeological Society’s fieldwork at Scabba Wood and Bilham Belvedere
the work of the South Yorkshire Industrial History Society
The review, which is generously illustrated with black & white and colour images, provides an essential insight into recent archaeological work across South Yorkshire.

Archaeology in South Yorkshire has been published since 1991.
