Skye Edge

Skye Edge has been selected as one of three UK development sites that will be part of Europan 9.  The theme for Europan 9 is sustainable cities and new public spaces.

What is Europan 9
Europan is Europe's leading housing design competition for young architects, run by the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE).  It is looking for innovative new ideas about how to design the next generation of housing in the UK.  This year is the ninth session of the competition.

The Theme For Europan 9:  Sustainable Cities and New Public Spaces
As our towns and cities respond to environmental, social and economic change, so must our housing.  Europan 9 wants to see solutions to modern problems.  With one of the largest house building programmes since the second world war under way, our cities are undergoing an unprecedented period of urban regeneration.  Meanwhile, climate change and scarcity of resources have become real problems that can no longer be ignored.

Sustainable communities can be defined as places that:

  • people want to live and work, now and in the future
  • meet the diverse needs of existing and future residents
  • are sensitive to their environment, and contribute to a high quality of life
  • are safe and inclusive, well planned, built and run
  • offer equality of opportunity and good services for all.

There is a need for higher standards of urban design in new housing developments in the UK. One of the challenges of this competition, therefore, is to find innovative ways to integrate urban design and the low carbon agenda into new developments that are genuinely sustainable communities.
