Burngreave and Fir Vale Masterplan
The Burngreave Fir Vale area falls within the Transform South Yorkshire Housing Market Renewal Pathfinder. South Yorkshire is the largest of the nine Housing Market Renewal Pathfinders established in 2002. The fundamental objective of this initiative is to target resources over a period of 10 years, for interventions that will help restructure the local and sub-regional housing markets, and create successful and sustainable communities through comprehensive regeneration. The strategic goal of the Transform South Yorkshire Housing Market Renewal Pathfinder is:
"To build and support sustainable communities and successful neighbourhoods where the quality and choice of housing underpins a buoyant economy and an improved way of life" (Transform South Yorkshire 2003)
Transform South Yorkshire has three strategic objectives, to achieve a radical improvement in the character and diversity of neighbourhoods, to improve housing quality, and to increase the range of housing types and tenures.
In this context, LDA Urban Design have been commissioned by Sheffield City Council to produce the Burngreave Fir Vale Master Plan. A steering group comprising of Council Officers, a local member/area panel chair, a representative from Transform South Yorkshire, and representatives from the three key community organisations (Burngreave New Deal for Communities, Burngreave Community Action Forum, Fir Vale Forum) guided LDA's work. Over the duration of Spring 2004 through to Spring 2005, several rounds of consultation have been undertaken to inform the master planning process. These included a stakeholder workshop on key issues, and public consultation events on the key issues, redevelopment options, the draft plan and the final plan. The Final Report (May 2005) submitted by the consultants takes account of the views expressed.
The final masterplan went to Council’s Cabinet on 25 May 2005 for formal approval. The document provides a strategic framework for investment, planning and development over the next decade. It proposes six areas of change that may be summarised as follows:
- Spital Hill & Ellesmere
- Catherine Street
- Woodside
- Owler Lane - Skinnerthorpe - Earl Marshal
- Page Hall
- Upwell Street
The masterplan can be downloaded below. A hard copy is available for inspection at First Point in Howden House - 1 Union Street, Burngreave Library, Burngreave New Deal for Communities Information Shop at Spital Hill, Burngreave Community Action Forum office, and the Fir Vale Forum office.
