Creative Places

What is it?

Creative Places is a partnership between Arts Council England, Yorkshire, and Sheffield City Council. It is an innovative approach to integrating culture into the Housing Market Renewal programme through three strands of activity:

  • Creative Futures (Eventus). A programme of advocacy, training and support for Housing Market Renewal teams, devised and delivered by Eventus. This will produce a cultural action plan and major cultural intervention in each of the three areas, together with additional projects and models of working.

  • A Public Art Officer post with equal responsibility for public art / good quality design in the public realm in HMR neighbourhoods, as well as the city centre

  • A feasibility study into the provision of artists studios / workspace in HMR areas in Sheffield, undertaken by Yorkshire ArtSpace

Why Are We Doing It?

The housing market renewal programme in Sheffield is about much more than bricks and mortar. Culture has a vital role to play in creating vibrant communities in these areas – places where people want to live, work and play.

This initiative offers opportunities for the arts to be embedded within large-scale housing/community building programmes and to improve cultural provision in the places experiencing housing renewal and growth.

Latest Information

This programme of work will allow Arts Council England, Yorkshire and the wider arts community to work in direct partnership with Sheffield City Council and the HMR Pathfinders in the planning and delivery of projects in the following ways.

  • Involving artists and cultural practitioners in the planning and design of new high-quality spaces will:
      • make the Sheffield HMR areas more desirable places to live
      • create a sense of local pride
      • make development more attractive to investors

  • The arts can help galvanise community engagement and participation in the regeneration of their local area.

  • High levels of engagement in cultural activity improves well-being and brings communities closer together

These principles are currently being introduced into our work and you can find all the details within the project pages of the North Sheffield Regeneration Team.
