Inclusive design is critical in delivering sustainable communities that meet the needs of all members of society, where nobody is excluded, whether by disability or any other characteristic.
Early consultation with one of the Council’s Access Officers and the appointment of an Access Champion can assist with the integration of inclusive design into the development.
Developments that raise accessibility issues will require a Design and Access Statement that shows how these have been addressed. Please note that Sheffield has developed local design guidance and standards (see links), which supplement national advice.

Design considerations
Position and orientate the building to help maximise access by making the best use of levels and gradients.
Provide sufficient suitably located and designed accessible parking spaces and set-down points.
Consider the needs of visitors with disabilities.
Provide accessible facilities where they are provided for non-disabled people.
Provide safe, dignified and convenient alternative access where there are overriding reasons why inclusive access cannot be achieved, for example at a listed building.
